Analyzing Music. [26 Mar 2008|09:19pm]
The other night at Janna's apartment, we had a deep discussion about music. We talked about the band Neutral Milk Hotel, and how I've been listening to them a lot. To come to think of it, It's pretty random on how I found out about them in the first place. When Omar was here visiting New York. He brought over his external harddive filled with some of his music. He transfered a few songs over to my laptop and then over to my Ipod. So then, I took that as a sign to become a little kid in a candy store with his harddrive. I started to pull out the classics he had, as well has the odd sounding band names..
Thanks Omar!

I would like to think that I'm a very passionate person, I can't help it, I'm Latin, it comes with the territory. One of the areas is music. This is how I'm going to break it down to you, on the way I portray some music. When the chemistry between rhythm & lyrics flows smoothly, to the point where you don't have have to pay attention to the words, and take it for face value. That right there, is such an amazing song. Don't kid me wrong, I love taking it to another level and analyze the lyrics of a song. Because a song's lyrics could be completely ambiguous or blatant. But its up us as listeners to grasp and interpret what he or she is trying to portray. If not, different strokes for different folks.

There's a few songs that would take ahold of me, and pretty much bring me to tears. It's amazing how a simple song would bring me back to a point in my life, where I was extremely happy or sad. It's some kind of body high that surges through out me, and makes me apart of the song. With that in mind, I'm able to fully understand a song without understanding the words...

Last.fm Is a really cool little program that keeps track of all the songs that you listen to. Plus it also gives you a little bio about the artist and how many times they've been played as a whole though the website. ( I'm still kind of new and trying to figure out what's what?)
I wish I would have joined a whole lot earlier, but never came around on doing so.My friend Andy was curious on what kind I'm music I was listening to.
Thanks Andy!

Here's a like to my profile:
http://www.last.fm/user/evilempires/

Too bad it doesn't keep track of the songs when I'm out and about....

I'm just curious... any of you guys can recommend a song or two?

Blues/Life/Music/Subway/ [23 Mar 2008|11:17am]
Sometime around 4:30 to 5:00amIsh... while waiting for the subway home (sitting on a bench). I ran into this Blues-like man (who wears his sunglasses at night!) who was also sitting on the bench. So I struck up a conversation with the man..

Blues:Where's your Guitar!?
Alej: I don't have one.
Blues: You have to be kidding me, you have to be some kind of musician. You look like one!
Alej: HaHaHa..I wish I knew how to play the Guitar!
Blues: So what kind of music do you like?
Alej: (I began to explain all types of music that I liked.)
Blues: Wow! That's a variety of music. There's so many people in this world who have a narrow taste.
(He gave me a little test by singing some songs)
Alej: I tend to not to discriminate, and if it sounds good... so be it!
Blues: Your a very unique person.
Alej: Why do you say that?
Blues: It's the presence that you give...

So we ended up talking for a while...About life in general and music... until someone sat right in the middle of the bench. He was at one end and I was at the other. We talked for a little bit like that and called it rap.

I just love striking up random conversations anywhere..

Jigsaw Falling Into Place [22 Feb 2008|11:49pm]

Just as you take my hand
Just as you write my number down
Just as the drinks arrive
Just as they play your favourite song
As your bad mood disappears
No longer wound up like a spring
Before you've had too much
Come back in focus again

The walls abandon shape
They've got a cheshire cat grin
All blurring into one
This place is on a mission
Before the night owl
Before the animal noises
Closed circuit cameras
Before you're comatose

Before you run away from me
Before you're lost between the notes
The beat goes round and round
The beat goes round and round
I never really got there
I just pretended that I had
What's the point of instruments
Words are a sawed off shotgun

Come on and let it out
Come on and let it out
Come on and let it out
Come on and let it out

Before you run away from me
Before you start unravelling
Before you take my mic
Just as you dance, dance, dance

Jigsaws falling into place
There is nothing to explain
Regard each other as you pass
She looks back, you look back
Not just once
Not just twice
Wish away the nightmare
Wish away the nightmare
You've got a light you can feel it on your back
You've got a light you can feel it on your back
Jigsaws falling into place

I Sleep In Laughter [21 Jan 2008|04:23pm]
[ mood | pleased ]

I somehow took a little nap today while listening to my Ipod. I guess it was long enough to have a quick dream..They say people only dream for five minutes only and in Black & White... As for myself, I would have to disagree with those statements. I've dreamed in the past these Full-length-Vivid-Colored- 3-part-Epic-Dreams-that need-an-intermission-break...

Okay enough with the tomfoolery... On to my dream.

People: Do you want to have breakfast with us?
Alejandro: When?
People: This Sunday.
Alejandro: What time?
People: At 10.
Alejandro: In the MORNING!!!?

I guess I found it hilarious enough to wake up laughing..

I crack myself up.... I Love it!!

It's funny because I've been known to catch the "Early Bird Special"..

Happy MLK Day!

40 Days and 40 Nights. [09 Sep 2007|11:08pm]
I really like this movie it's a good romantic comedy .. it's been a while since I've seen it.. I think the last time I saw it was in Spain.. I bought the dvd from work just the other week and I finally got a chance to watch it today. But it was a little difficult to watch this time around....for some of the obvious reasons and it's story involving some of the characters .. It reminded me of too many things..

Irene: Yeah, It's a co-workers birthday, do you want some?
Alex: Yeah?
Irene: Yes! There's a lot of it..
Alex: Are you sure? I don't want to get you in trouble for giving out the forbidden cake..
Irene: Hahaha.. it's fine I'll get you a plate and fork.
Alex: Thank you!

Pleasure + Pain [26 Aug 2007|04:41pm]
[ mood | thankful ]

Ben Harper is a bluesman with a funk fixation, a folkie with a hard-rock jones, a soul-singing rock star who sits when he plays. His is a strange and powerful mixture, creating a sound of ancient blues and modern feedback, of pop and protest...
- Steve Appleford

Today I finally got a chance to watch the final dvd that came in the mail. As it turns out he only put out 3 dvds so far. I was hoping that he had a music video collection or something. The three Dvd's are

1. Ben Harper and the Blindboys of Alabama: Live at the Apollo (2005)
2. Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals: Live at the Hollywood Bowl (2003)
3. Ben Harper: Pleasure and Pain (2002)

I've been listening to lot of Ben Harper lately since the last few months.. He's such a talented music artist. His music and lyrics are extremely powerful filled with emotion and love.I really love it when he plays acoustically. It was great to have finally watched the documentary, 5 years in the making... I remembered the first time (2002) when I heard about the documentary and I wanted to go see it in movie theater. It was playing in San Fransisco and I asked Nicole if she wanted to go see it.... but she couldn't because she had prior engagements and I didn't want to go alone...

The documentary was great! I really don't want to spoil it for people who haven't seen it and are fans of Ben Harper. But, I can't seem to remember the first time I heard about Ben Harper.. I must have been before 02 because I wouldn't known about the movie.

During the documentary there was a scene where he asked the audience how did you hear about Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals. First he asked was it from a video?(A few people screamed)Was it from the Radio?(More people screamed)Then he stops and asked , "What radio stations are you listening to? He was shocked to hear their response! The last question was .. Who's heard about us through a friend!? (everyone screamed) Since his debut Album in 1994 "Welcome to the Cruel World" it seems that It's been all through word of mouth about him and his band... In the documentary it showed how all types of people would enjoy his music.. from an infant to a 70 year old person.. It's amazing hear how long they have traveled and tour to get where they are today..

The lyrics he chooses for some of his songs are very beautiful.. to the point of tears...with the help with his music and lyrics.. it's helping me rebuild my relationship with God... and I'm very thankful.

Sunday with Ben Harper + 1.5 [19 Aug 2007|04:24pm]
[ mood | pleased ]

Today was a very relaxing day.. I spent part of my Sunday baby sitting my little nephew of 8 months old. While taking care of him we watched one of the 3 Dvds that I bought of Ben Harper. We watched Live At The Hollywood Bowl: Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals. I really like the concert and I'm pretty sure Juanito liked it too.. he was kinda dancing along with the music.. I even sang along to a few of Ben Harper's song... he smiles... which is a good thing..

Canada Talk [14 Aug 2007|06:54pm]
[ mood | pleased ]

Today I got a chance to talk to Leeanne for a bit. Man it's going on 2 years since I last saw her. We had some good times while living in Barcelona..

She said that she's so exited for me that I'm moving to New York City. I'm going to be a lot closer for her to come visit. I asked her how long does it take to get to New York.. She said it's about a 10 hours of driving.. And she'll probably take the Bus because it runs for about 70 bucks. (Canadian) During our conversation we brought up Burritos!!!!.. on how we must make them when she's here.. She said honestly, she never had a better burrito.

Man .. burritos sound good right about now...

Ben Harper Lifeline Tour [12 Aug 2007|01:54pm]
[ mood | curious ]

Ben Harper is having another Tour.. Which is great! But... it seems that I'm going to miss him by 3 days when he makes a stop in New York. The crazy thing is people are already selling ticket on ebay for about $300+ dollars for the second Roll. Which is insane!!! Because when I saw him in San Diego in the begging of the year... it was an outdoor event.. anyone who's anybody could have walked up to the front of the group to get a closer look. And I'm pretty sure that we all paid the same amount for our tickets..

So want I'm thinking is... I still have a gift card from Wherehouse Music for $40 dollars.. I'll just might end up buying some oh his Live Concerts on DVD.. But, I wonder if they will make it in time before I leave for New York..

Subject: Go East!
Hello my dear friend

Since I haven't been online all that much on myspace, I've missed out on the news that you're moving to NYC. I just wanted to say to you that ..I really think you're an incredibly brave guy, and that you're doing the right thing. Knowing you, I'm sure that finding nice people to hang around with, and get accustomed to the city wont be any problem at all for ya.

And if I may be a bit selfish, that also means that you're moving a little bit closer, which means that the flights to get to you becomes a little bit cheaper. =)

may the force be with you, and send my love to Erica.

and in the words of the gigantic insect in Family guy:

Bay Area Memories [08 Aug 2007|08:47am]
This past weekend I was able to pay a visit to the Bay Area which felt so brief. As soon as I was there I felt I already had to leave..It was killing me because I was having such a good time too. For the majority of the weekend I helped out Leo & Natalie with some errands they had to run.. Basicly stuff they needed for their new Apartment.
(Safeway,Goodwill, Kmart,Outlet Stores,Target, UPS,Petco)

One of which was a stop at Costco. We all left early morning on Saturday like around 2:30pm The one of the good things about Costco is you can arrive a little hungry and leave pleased. I just love all of the free samples that Costco has to offer.. It's always nice to get an opportunity to chat with the employees that are giving out the samples too.

"Your not drinking on the job are you?"
"Is there Vodka mixed in with this pineapple juice?"
Brian: "Is there alcohol in this Root Beer?"
"Do you get a lot of crazies asking for more samples?

While in Costco I called up Omar to see what's up with the game plan for Saturday night.. I told him that I'll pick him up after work at the Balboa. But I needed to find out what Nicole was doing... The plan was hang out with Nicole before hand and then go pick up Omar from work.. Nicole wanted to watch a screening of Rushmore at 7:00pm. But I wasn't able to make it due to the errands we were running.. So I told her I'll be in the City about 9:00ish. With that in mind I took off around 8:15 and totally forgetting to ask my brother for a few dollars for the Bay Bridge Toll.. It's up to $4.00! and I only had a 2 dollar bill.. what are the odds...

While driving on the 880 North I was thinking to myself I need to find a Wamu Bank. And I'm pretty sure that the toll doesn't take Master Card..As well I didn't want to drive to Downtown Berkeley for a bank, I'll be backtracking.. So I ended up getting off in downtown Oakland and drove for a bit.. It must have been a strange night because everyone I asked for directions.. didn't make any sense.. I was driving around in circles for twenty minutes. Then it came to me... there's a Wamu Bank next to Boston Market and Safeway on Broadway street.

Streets of Emotions =/

While driving on Broadway memories past would rush through me... like the time where I helped out with Apartment sitting and the person had this one crazy cat.(who doesn't like males.)

Saving Irving's friend's life...by driving him to the hospital in the middle of the night. Because he had some kind of allergic reaction where he couldn't breath properly when he was jogging. The lines of gratitude when he shared with me..

"Thank you for saving me life..."
"This means so much to me.."
"There's no way I'm going to go out like this.."
"I thought I'll go out in a blaze of gunfire like Tupac."

Yes people, Tupac..
He said Tupac..

I wanted to laugh so hard when he told me that.. but I held it back since he looked like he was in so much pain..

The meal for 3 at the Boston Market..so much food you'll have to save it for leftovers.. Great for Thanksgiving Meals..

After pulling a twenty out of the ATM which only took about 30 minutes out of my time.. I rushed over to the city... While on the Bay Bridge I talked to Nicole and she said she was already at home.. So that meant I had to drive in the city.. phew, driving in the city is always madness.. plus while driving in a huge Dodge Ram Truck! Like always I got a little lost and Nicole had to guide me to her place..

I felt it was a little too late to catch a movie and then make it over to pick up Omar.. So Nicole and I decided to play a few games of Pool at a bar not so far away from the Balboa. Before that I called up Lloyd to find out what was he doing that night... since I was in the City.. it turns out he was already passing out.. next time I guess.

Nicole and I hung out for a bit at the Balboa while Omar was finishing up with work. After work we all decided that we need to get something to drink! We made a few stops and ended up at Safeway to buy some Tecate Beer and some frozen Pizza. Pizza & Mexican Beer what a great combo!

We finally made it to Omar's house where we all drank and played Tres till 4:00-:30am. We drank we ate and Omar took pictures with his Polaroid Camera. Nicole's friend came over like around 3am and we all showed him how to play Tres...

The next morning Omar made this killer breakfast that we forgot to take a picture of. I helped Omar with an errand he had to do by driving him to Fedex and then dropping him off at work. Omar drew me a map on how to get back to the Bay Bridge..if not I would have been lost again.. I just love maps...

The one thing I don't miss about the Bay Area is the traffic...

I uploaded a few pictures onto my facebook..

Bay Area [01 Aug 2007|01:03pm]
It always seems that when I plan a trip to the Bay Area.... there's never enough time to hang out with all of the people I want to. This Friday night I'll be driving up with Natalie and her whole wreaking crew, so I'm able to check out their new Apartment..

I"m really excited because It's been a while since I've been in the Bay Area.... It's coming up on a year. I would like to hit up Berkeley so I'm able make a pit stop at La Burrita. ♥ Maybe catch a movie.. This is one of the road trips I'm going to take before my move to New York...
